Istanbul University, Faculty of Fisheries is a high educational institution with dynamic, innovative, young staff and also a most-preferred faculty in Turkey. The Faculty trains both undergraduate and graduate students for an engineering career in fisheries and aquatic sciences. In our faculty, the educational and teaching activities are maintained by the competent staff of our departments (Marine Biology, Freshwater Biology, Aquaculture, Fish Disease, Fisheries Technology, and Seafood Processing Technology). Furthermore, the Faculty has two research units (Gökçeada Marine Research Unit and Sapanca Freshwater Research Unit) and also a well-equipped research vessel (Yunus S R/V). Research vessel has been maintaining the researches concerning the fishing resources and the pollution in national and international waters. Our mission is to train the engineers and specialists to be responsible for sustainable fisheries and protecting living resources, and also to pioneer the fisheries sector and the society. On the other hand, our vision is to become a magnet in the fisheries and aquatic sciences for both national and international levels.

Department of Freshwater Biology are focused on taxonomy, ecology and biology of microscopic organisms to fish in aquatic ecosystems, analyses of water quality, chemical, physical and biological interactions in inland waters, including rivers, lakes, reservoir and wetlands, productivity, biological diversity, conservation and sustainable management of inland waters. Main activities in department of Freshwater Biology;

  • Bacteria, plankton, macrophytes, invertebrate and fish taxonomy, ecology and biology
  • Population dynamics, community interactions, ecosystem functioning
  • Biological diversity
  • Water quality, eutrophication problems in inland waters
